Summer in Serre Chevalier & Briancon
Briancon is the highest town in Europe at 4000ft and famously boasts 300 days of sunshine every year. Known as the 'Ville d'Art et d'Histoire' Briancon was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2008. The fascinating medieval town dating back to around 800 BC, enlarged from 1700 under the direction of renowned military architect Vauban, is well worth a visit.
Briancon was declared the 'sportiest town in France' by L'Equipe offering the following activities throughout the summer (list not exhaustive!);
- Mountain biking using the Serre Chevalier lift system,
- Road cycling (the legendary Cols of the Tour de France),
- White water rafting, kayaking and fishing on the Durance/Guisane,
- Mountain climbing via ferrata and canyoning,
- Ice skating and ice hockey,
- Golf (Claviere 25 mins, Gap 90mins or Avigliana 70 mins),
- Horse riding,
- Go-karting,
- Quad biking,
- or take a short trip of under an hour to Les Deux Alpes and ski!
